We all want it… healthy, shiny, sexy hair! But we fry, dye, and Lord knows what else and still expect healthy hair. Like everything else in life, what you put in is what you get out. Here are a few tips to achieve healthy hair growth:

Healthy Diet: Yep that’s right! You have to eat right! It’s been proven that a healthy diet improves the your hair, skin and nails.

Exercise: Yep, Yep that too! LOL! I know you don’t want to hear it but exercising helps too. Get up and get your blood flowing!

Take your vitamins: A,B,C,D… they all help in some type of way!

Trim, Trim!: Yes, trim those ends ladies! Split ends will continue to split up the hair shaft and cause breakage. Make sure and get a good trim every few months to avoid splitting.

Lighten up on the heat: Try to only use heat in your hair 1-2 times a week, OR not at all. You may be wanting your hair to look right every day, but in the process you’re burning it out!

Those are just a few tips to help your start your year off right! Cheers to healthy hair in 2012!

On our journey to beautiful, healthy hair, we tend to focus on just our hair and not the tools we use for it. We have the nicest brushes, combs, flat irons, etc, but the brush is full of hair, the comb has teeth missing, and the flat iron has product build up all over it. You may never think about it, but you’re causing more harm to your hair by not taking care of your precious hair tools.

Here are some quick tips on how to clean and store your hair tools:

Wash your combs and brushes! Ok you might say DUH to this tip but some people don’t clean their combs and brushes. It’s really gross! Once or twice a week, take a mild soap and properly clean your combs and brushes. You don’t want to use a dirty comb on clean hair!

Store your brushes face down in a drawer. This way, dust or whatever else is in the air, won’t land on your bristles.

Wipe off your flat irons and blow dryers. Over time, hair products can gunk up on these tools. You can use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth to remove the grease build up. Oh and make sure it’s off and DON’T USE WATER!

Don’t let your friends use your stuff! Real talk, you don’t know their hair regimen.

Hope these tips help! Let’s treat our hair right!

It’s that season again, Winter! The greatest season ever! (Insert sarcasm here, LOL.) Here are a few hair tips to help you and your hair during these winter months:

Keep the hot stuff to a minimum! Avoid using curling irons or blow dryers a lot. Since it’s already dry outside, you don’t want to dry your hair out even more with excessive heat use.

Wrap it up! Wear scarves and hats to protect your hair from the harsh winter winds. Avoid wool or cotton scarves and hats though, those materials can dry out and pull on your hair.

Watch your collars! Be mindful of those wool and cotton collars on your winter coats. The materials can pull on your hair and cause breakage and hair loss to your nape area. Try using silk, satin, or pashmina scarves to cover your collars and protect your hair.

Condition it up! Treat your hair weekly with a good moisturizing conditioner to bring back the moisture to your hair. The cold weather can drain your hair, making it feel dry and brittle.

Love cold water. Once you condition your hair, rinse the conditioner out with cool water to lock the moisture in and give your hair extra shine.

Everywhere you look there’s some new product, gadget or tip on how to get healthy, beautiful hair. Special “magic” potions that can change brittle hair to soft, sexy hair in one snap! Now those products may and a lot of times do achieve great results, however there is much more that YOU have to do to achieve healthy hair. Simply put, what you put in is what you’ll get out.

Healthy hair starts from the INSIDE. What are you putting in your body? If you’re always eating a bunch of junky, fatty, greasy foods, believe it or not, it CAN affect your hair. Your body has no proper source of nutrients to pull from. Look at it like this… Let’s say you plant an apple seed in soil full of bad toxins. That seed will grow up an unhealthy tree with rotten apples or may not even grow at all! So if you want healthy, beautiful hair, it’s vitally important to put the right type of foods in your body. The right kind of foods are fruits and veggies! Duh right?!?!?! So get to it and do what YOU know is right.

Here are a few tips that has helped me!

Drink LOTS of water. You know the 8 glass rule. If you don’t like the way water tastes, (I REALLY don’t get that, ughhh it’s water! LOL) squeeze some lemon juice in it!

Exercise. Get up and do something! Exercise is important for the body to function on a daily basis. It also helps to burn off and sweat out all those toxins that we’ve put in our bodies by eating bad.

Eat your fruit. Apples, bananas, pears, plums, peaches, grapes… Fruit is such a great snack and also tastes great blended into a smoothie.

Eat your green vegetables. Fresh green veggies have so many vitamins in them to help promote healthy hair, skin, and nails.

Glowing Green Smoothie! Man!!!! This smoothie is the truth! I’ve been making and drinking this smoothie every day for over a month. My skin is clearer, hair feels great, and nails are rock hard! Plus I have lots of energy and I’m getting a good dose of fruits and veggies every morning. Click HERE to find out more on the Glowing Green Smoothie.

I hope these tips help you on the road to healthy, beautiful, hair. Remember you reap what you sow…. especially when it comes to your body.

Before I could answer, she blurted out, ” Well I heard when it burns, that’s when you rinse it out”. She then told me that her former stylist told her that burning is how you know. I QUICKLY corrected her

and told her that was not the case. I determine how it’s broken down by picking up strands of your hair and checking the curl pattern.

It really bothers me when stylist tell their clients the wrong information. Your relaxer is not supposed to burn! Plain and simple, no burning! If you properly base your scalp and use the right strength relaxer ( fine, normal, or super) for your hair it will not burn. Other things like not scratching or brushing your scalp on relaxer day can prevent relaxer burns. Also if you have a sensitive scalp, request a sensitive scalp relaxer that caters to your hair needs.

Ladies please don’t get caught up in this urban hair myth!

“Instead of lots of shadow, I use individual fake lashes to make my eyes pop!” – Ali Fedotowsky

“I do a 30-second ice-water rinse right after rinsing out my conditioner. It keeps my hair shiny.” – Padma Lakshmi

“Brush your hair before you shower. It helps the products to disperse evenly.” – Cheryl Burke

“I braid my hair when it’s damp. Once it’s dry, I take it out and I have beachy waves.” – Audrina Patridge

“Make sure to blend bronzer into your face and neck. Otherwise you could end up looking like a clown!” – Sarah Hyland

“The way to draw on eyeliner is you follow the angle of your bottom lash line and when you reach the outer corner, extend the line up and out past your upper lash line.” – Taylor Swift

“My mom told me to use a red lipstick as lipstick and also as blush!” – Dania Ramirez

You pull out your paddle brush and silk scarf and go to work, wrapping those locks, long or short, around your head. As time goes by, you notice that your hair feels a bit thiner on that one side that you constantly pull across the front of your head during your wrap. We hardly think to look at the way we wrap our hair. Wrapping your hair isn’t bad, it’s the way you do it. Instead of wrapping you hair going towards one direction all the time, switch it up! Every other week switch the direction you wrap your hair. This technique lightens the stress pull on your hair and will stop the thinning on that one side of your head. So remember, Switch Up Your Wrap!

You might see the title of this post and say, “Hmmmm Uhhh Duh, Ayana! That’s what you’re supposed to do!” Yeah, well, talking to your hair stylist about your hair is easier said than done. I have some clients that will tell ALL about their hair and some… wwweeeelllll… it’s like pulling teeth! Then I have other clients that “tell half truths”. You know, those clients who are kitchenticians (clients who do things to their hair at home), mess up their hair, then say “Oh wow, I don’t know how THAT happened!”
Communication with your hair stylist is key. Don’t be afraid, we’re here to help! Let your stylist know EVERYTHING, medical issues, stress, hormonal changes, etc. These types of information can be crucial to your hair health. It will also let your stylist know how to properly care for your hair. So talk, ‘fess up, spill the beans! Cheers to GREAT HAIR!
