TheHaiRazor HairStory: My Time With Wax

My Time With Wax
The first time I got my eyebrows waxed was a complete disaster. I was an assistant at the time, and my boss and I would always experiment on each other. So this particular day I had the bright idea to ask her to wax my eyebrows. I never waxed them before because I was afraid of the pain, but this day I was feeling quite gutsy. My boss tried to talk me out of it because my eyebrows are not that thick and didn’t need waxing, BUT I begged her to anyway.

We went back to the spa area of the salon and got started. First eyebrow came out good. Ok cool……. off to the next one then. My boss laid the wax on my skin and put the strip over it, let it sit in, then pulled it off and BAM! Half of my eyebrow went off with the strip! My poor little eyebrow hairs were so soft they got stuck on the strip, and it didn’t even have wax on it. At first I was horrified, what am I gonna do?!?!? I have school tomorrow! (I was in high school at the time) Then when the shock wore off we just laughed and it was the salon story of the week. Oh and until my eyebrow grew back, I had to just draw it on with eyebrow pencil. That was my last time fooling with wax on my brows! LOL

TheHaiRazor HairStory: “The BIG Cut”

TheHaiRazor
I was 17, just graduated from high school, and thought I was grown. I was working in a salon as a shampoo assistant so I had the privilege of getting my hair done for free. I don’t know what I was thinking that day, I guess I just wanted something different. I told the stylist to cut my hair all off. We had already cut it the week before, slightly tapered in the back, but I just couldn’t take it. That style was too hard to manage. So we did it, the big cut. The end result was beautiful, I loved it! I felt like a new woman, well new teenager! Later that day my mom came by the salon. DON DON DON! Her face told everything, and it wasn’t happiness. I “forgot” to tell her I was cutting my hair, I really didn’t think about it. Like I said before, I thought I was grown. My mom was so mad, she barely spoke to me for a week (she likes me with long hair). My dad on the other hand, liked it, and said, “hey, it’s just hair”. He’s bald by the way, so he would be one to say that.

My mom eventually got over that cut and thinks its cute, well she had to, it’s been 6 years since that cut, many other cuts, weaves, and more cuts. I’m still short and loving it! My mom and I laugh at this story now, my HaiRazor HairStory: The BIG Cut.

TheHaiRazor HairStory: “Chlorine”

HaiRazor HairStory: "Chlorine"
Hey HaiRazor Family! I’m adding a new feature to the site, “HaiRazor HairStory”. It will feature HairStories from my past, friends, family, clients, and even you! If you have a HairStory you would like to share send it in to me at ayana@thehairazor.com. Ok so here it goes, my HairStory about Chlorine…

Aaahhhh summer, schools out, it’s hot, and I was in summer camp. I may have been nine or ten at the time. We were in Summit, New Jersey and my mother enrolled me in the local YMCA close to her job. I stuck out like a sore thumb, being that I was the only black girl there. Every other girl was either “white” or “mixed”, with what I thought was “good hair” at the time. We had swimming lessons every day and my mom had me make sure I wore my swim cap so the chlorine from the pool wouldn’t harm my relaxed hair. Even with the swim cap, my hair got a little wet. I saw the other girls just rinse their hair after lessons and put it up in a messy bun. At the time I thought I could do the same thing, but boy was I wrong. Fast forward to one too many times doing that (and not shampooing my hair right after I got out the pool), my hair started breaking. My poor hairline was DONE! So the lesson I actually did learned that summer, since I still don’t know how to swim, was to make sure and take extra care for your hair when dealing with chlorine. Oh and my hairline did eventually grow back! :-)

**HaiRazor Tip** Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three is a great shampoo to remove chlorine from your hair. Just shampoo twice, followed by a conditioning shampoo, then conditioner.
