Check out today’s Ask TheHaiRazor!

HI, My Name is LaJoya and I’m a college student. I’m thinking about cutting my hair again into a short style. I want a cute and sassy style but also a style that I can handle. I am an athlete in college and I swim at times. Could you possibly help me out with what styles will look good? My hair right now is chin length.

Hi LaJoya! First, thanks for this great question! There are several great short styles that you can easily manage. The one that I love most is the short pixie cut. This cut is very simple and low maintenance. I personally have a pixie cut and I love it!. I barely use heat on my hair, just a great hair wax to give it that messy look. You can do the short pixie cut ( ex. Halle Berry) or the longer version ( ex. Rihanna). You can even switch it up a do a cute flat style.

Post Swim Tip: Find a great shampoo that removes the chlorine from your hair. Paul Mitchell’s Shampoo Three is a great product for that. Then back it up with a great moisturizing conditioner (Paul Mitchell’s Super Charged Conditioner). These products will help keep your hair in tip top shape, even with a very active lifestyle.

Also, here are two videos that can help you style your short pixie cut:

I was in Wal-Mart with my husband last week and the girl checking us out overheard that I was a hairstylist. She the politely asked if she could ask me a hair question. I said sure and she proceeded. She said her hair is natural and she wanted to know of any good gels or pomades that could help slick her hair into a ponytail. She tried the “brown” gel, Jam, and others but by mid-day its no longer slick, but a frizzy ponytail. Her hair was in a ponytail that day so I could see for myself what the gel failed to do.

There are two products that I told her may work for her needs. The first was Hick’s Edges Pomade. My client suggested this product to me a while back and it works really good! Hicks doesn’t clump on the hair but it is best to use it on clean, dry hair. It retails for about $15 but you can find it online cheaper on some sites. They had a website a while back but now I can’t seem to find it!

The second product is a bit like Hick’s but much cheaper. I’ve never tried it but it’s the Organic Root Stimulator Edge Control Hair Gel. The gel retails for about $5 at your local beauty supply and online. I’ve seen really good reviews about this product on YouTube. I’ll make sure and try it out for you guys really soon!

Do you know of any other products that can help tame those edges? If so, feel free to drop a line below!

With this feature, I will be answering all your beauty questions. You can submit your questions here on the site, Facebook, and Twitter! My first question comes from one of my Facebook fans Marie:

Okay were do I began?
I have been contemplating about going natural because it seems like the relaxers have been causing my hair to reach a point of no return. Help me Hair razor I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!! How do I train my hair for the natural look? Currently I have braids in my hair, but afterward I do not know what to do!!!
P.S. could you tell me what products to use also please?

Marie,
First let’s start with the your hair issue with relaxers. Are you doing your own relaxers or getting them done professionally? If you are doing your own relaxers, I would recommend for you to STOP RIGHT NOW! You’re doing more harm by doing your own relaxers. You may be over-processing your hair, you’re not seeing exactly where the new growth ends and the previously processed hair begins. So if you want to stay on the chemical train, seek a professional hair stylist.

Ok so now let’s get to the nitty gritty of your question, natural hair! Going from relaxed to natural is not a simple process. You have two choices in this matter, cut all the relaxed hair off and start from fresh, or gradually grow your relaxer out and cut the relaxed ends little by little along the way. You can continue to wear braids until your hair grows out to a length you like or try sew-ins. When finally to the natural state you like, you can wear you hair out, in twist, curly, pressed etc. Styling also depends on how your hair is in it’s natural state. Jane Carter Solutions have great products for natural hair. I especially love the Nourish and Shine Cream. Also take a look at these natural hair care sites:
